GLOBAL WARMING - Thinking local

Global warming is a subject that is widely discussed nowadays and in order to help prevent the worst from happening to our beloved living planet here are some general tips and suggestions on what you can do:
  1. Recycle (glass, metal, plastic, paper that you can then buy again, food residues can be given to pigs or a compost bin and use a recycle community or a charity shop for everything else from clothes to computers, to accessories). Practically before throwing out think where it goes or could go.
  2. Save energy (switch to light saving bulbs, turn off unused light and turn off the standbys on tvs, monitors, radios etc.)
  3. Save water: turn off the tap properly, don't let the water run while you brush your teeth, repair leaks, use a basin to wash the dishes in, then obviously rinse!! (some dirty people take the plates out and leave them to drip to dry and that leaves on all the germs and soap. YUK!)
  4. Use other means of transport where possible (bike, electric bike, walk, train, etc.) and avoid unnecessary trips with your car (eg. forgot something at the supermarket? It could wait... unless it's your children or toilet paper! LOL)
  5. Repair where possible any possessions you own(eg.sew sock holes) don't just buy new things because it's easier.
  6. Don't shop like a pig... as in don't buy more than you can eat or cook, food waste is not good for your pockets, not good for the environment, not good for people that would love to eat more but have very little.
  7. Use, if possible, solar panels, wind mills and other energy producing devices that use natural elements. Nuclear energy is not good for our planet.
  8. Drive slower: your car will use less fuel and your life will be certainly more safe.
  9. Buy environmentally friendly products, recycled items and energy saving appliances.
  10. Buy or barter used books and other goods, used does not mean bad, ugly or dirty, most used stuff you find will be as good as new and will work as good as new and the less you buy, the less is wasted in the end.
  11. Care about your car: things like mainenace, aligning the tires, switching to biodiesel fuel, not drive in traffic and keeping your tires inflated really helps. Even better if you can use a hybrid car or a natural-source-fuelled car.
  12. Plant plants, trees, flowers, it helps the environment and makes your home look nice, and if you can plant deciduos trees they will help to keep your house cooler in summer and warmer in winter.
